HORROR COMICS AFTER THE CODE

Here's another example of a horror comic neutered by the CCA. Titled DARK SHADOWS (no, not the Dan Curtis TV show), it was published by Farrell under Steinway Comic Pub. Inc. and the AB America's Best imprint. Comprised of reprints of tamer stories from Farrell's HAUNTED THRILLS, it also had two new stories, including one humorous strip that was drawn in a cartoon style by an unknown artist. The only artist in the issue that has up until now been identified is Robert Webb for the story "Showdown", another Farrell reprint from FANTASTIC FEARS. Webb worked for most of his career at the Iger Shop producing content for Fiction House. He also drew several stories for Gilbert's Classics Illustrated, including an adaptation of Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN.

After just three issues, DARK SHADOWS -- and Farrell -- faded into the horror comic sunset.

WEB OF EVIL NO. 1

There's not much in the way of creator information regarding this first of 21 issues of Quality's WEB OF EVIL with the exception of Jack Cole's art on the story, "Custodian of the Dead" and lettering by Ben Oda.

Alfred Grenet (Editor); Richard Arnold (Associate Editor) put together some fairly good tales here, especially "Ghosts of Doom", an eerie revenge story and the bizarre "The Phantom Freaks".
