Anyone remotely familiar with horror comics will recognize the name Bernie Wrightson. In so many ways, his work is unparalleled in the industry. His meticulous cross-hatching and brushwork only got better and better over his career. Unfortunately we lost him just a few years ago in 2017.
While a lot of his earlier work appeared in numerous fanzines, this 3-page story from DC's THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY #179 (March/April 1969) is generally acknowledged as his first professional comic book story sale.
Bernie died too young. (We all do I guess, if we think about it.) His utter mastery of the creepy comic was evident even in his last days when he was producing the comic book "sequel" to Frankenstein. It's a shame he was unable to complete that work with his own hands.
ReplyDeleteA true master. You could see his technique evolve rapidly and he absorbed all the best from Frazetta, Williamson, et al, all the while creating his own exquisite and instantly-recognizable style. You can't say that about everybody.
