Often referred to as a romantic drama, Victor Hugo's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME also contains elements of adventure -- and if anyone has seen Lon Chaney's 1923 film version -- horror as well. The tragic story of Quasimodo is adapted here for the first time in comics by Dick Briefer in JUMBO COMICS #1 (Fiction House, September 1938). Briefer drew the story and it is speculated that he might have written it as well. It would be almost a decade later when he would create his famous Frankenstein strip for Prize Comics.
Lots of notable artists are also in this issue: Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, Mort Meskin and Bernard Baily.
